African Spirits in the New World features altar arrangements of sacred art of Brazil, Haiti and Cuba collected by Dr. Frank McGlynn, professor of anthropology at the University of Pittsburgh, at Greensburg, It underscores and honors the artistry of Africa and her artistic descendants in the New World. The most important orishas [divinities] represented in the exhibition are Ellegguá, Shangó, Obatalá, Oshún, Ogun, Babalu Ayć, and Yemaya.
This exhibition is supported by a grant from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, a state agency funded by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the National Endowment for the Arts, and by the International Festival 2000 on Latin America and the Caribbean.
