Dear ICA Community,
This time last fall, we announced that the Miller ICA has been renamed the ICA Pittsburgh (ICA) and will open in its expanded, new home in the Richard King Mellon Hall of Sciences in 2027. Today I’m thrilled to share two new programs that ICA will mount while our new museum is being built.
Starting in spring 2025, we will be launching The Generative Museum, a digital initiative that will open the doors of our galleries virtually as construction continues on our physical space designed by ZGF Architects. We’re excited to partner with the nonprofit arts organization KADIST on this project, and with the artist-run space EPOCH, whose scenography will help bring our galleries to life in the virtual realm.
Our digital exhibitions will pull from artwork in KADIST’s international collection and make accessible collections throughout Pittsburgh that are not otherwise on view publicly. Some of the virtual galleries will include exhibitions co-curated by the ICA and KADIST, while others will be dedicated to AI-generated installations created by you, our visitors. We are eager to open up the curatorial process to everyone through the transformative power of AI.
Also in spring 2025, we will be launching a new in-person symposia series titled Institution as Form: Remaking the Museum. These public and private sessions will interrogate the role of arts institutions in our society and, in anticipation of our new institution, create a roadmap for ICA’s programmatic vision.
With the conclusion of our programming at the Purnell Center, we look forward to sharing more details of our interim activities in the coming months. For now, please reference our press release for the latest information. We’re excited for what the future holds and to build the foundation of our new institution together!
Sincerely,
Elizabeth Chodos
