We're Hiring for an Arts Technician Position!

Miller ICA is Carnegie Mellon University’s contemporary art institute providing transformative experiences with contemporary art through exhibitions, conversation, and exchange in a free and open public space. The Miller ICA is 7000 sq ft of gallery space located in the Purnell Center for the Arts on the Pittsburgh campus.

We are seeking a thorough Arts Technician to join our team. If you are comfortable working with and advising students on art handling and installation techniques, this position could be for you!

Core responsibilities include:

  • Monitoring and maintaining the gallery and physical plant
  • Training and overseeing student workers
  • Research and plan for exhibition materials and equipment
  • Oversee student exhibition planning and installation
  • Support with events as needed.

This is an extremely mobile position that requires frequent lifting and moving of artwork and equipment; requires comfort working on ladders and vertical mast lift for extended periods of time; frequent lifting of approx. 50 lbs.

You should demonstrate:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to follow instructions and work both independently as well as in collaboration with artists, curators, students, faculty, administrators and the general public
  • Ability to work well under pressure, with frequent changes and interruptions, and to meet deadlines
  • Detail oriented while maintaining a broad perspective
  • Ability to prioritize effectively
  • Creative and resourceful problem solving

Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in Fine Art preferred or equivalent experience
  • Audio and Video proficiency with Mac and PC, extensive knowledge of computer operation and basic digital photography
  • Experience with Google Drive and Calendar, Sketchup and Microsoft Office Suite
  • Basic carpentry, framing walls, drywall, pedestals and other exhibition apparatus
  • Experience with power tools (Table saw, Miter saw, Circular saw, Band Saw)
  • Comfort using ladders and vertical mast lift
  • Familiarity and interest in electrical wiring, gallery lighting, and portable audio system
  • Familiarity with registration methods including condition reports, experience crating, packing and shipping of artworks
  • Writing and proofing a plus.

Additional Information:

  • Must be available to work varying schedules depending on the Gallery’s exhibition schedule and be available some weekend and evening hours as needed.
